2015 End of Osprey Season Gathering And Some Photos

Good afternoon from the gloomy Eastern Shore of Maryland.  The plans are almost finalized for our end of season gathering.  It will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2015 from 2-4 p.m. at O’Loughlin’s Restaurant and Pub, College Parkway Center, 1258 Bay Dale Drive, Arnold, Maryland 21012, 410-349-0200.  I tried to obtain a beautiful location on the water for our event, but the cost was prohibitive.  O’Loughlins’s will provide a cash bar with separate checks, and a per head fee for food.  I am working on the menu, and will let you know the cost as soon as I have it.  So I will need a head count to let the restaurant know how much food to prepare.  Although the hours of our event are 2-4 p.m., I am sure if we want to hang around later, it would be fine.

Craig Koppie will be speaking at a Wildlife Festival at Patuxent Refuge that day and will probably not be able to join us.  Maybe he can stop by toward the end of our gathering, or meet us later.  I will see what can be worked out.  I will invite Dr. Paul Spitzer to join us, and let you all know if he can stop by.  Hopefully, we should also have some folks from the Chesapeake Conservancy in attendance.  Crazy Osprey Man (COM) will also be there to greet you all and regale his adoring public with yet more osprey stories!  We will have some of Featherdog’s posters at the event that will be available for a donation to the Conservancy.  There may even be a special surprise for everyone who attends!

There is still an osprey hanging around.  Here are some photos from the scraggly tree I took yesterday:

Could it be E.T.? It's possible!

Could it be E.T.? It’s possible!

A lonely osprey being pestered by some crows.

The lonely osprey being pestered by some crows.

Doesn’t it figure that we have only one osprey around, and the crows still manage to find him!

Can't a guy get a little late season respect?

Can’t a guy get a little late season respect?

The poor osprey just wants to relax in the scraggly tree:

Just leave me alone!

Just leave me alone!

The osprey decides to go fishing:

Our lone remaining osprey trying to catch a meal

Now that the ospreys are almost gone, our majestic national bird is starting to be a frequent visitor to the neighborhood:

We hate to see our ospreys leave, but it is good to welcome our national bird

We hate to see our ospreys leave, but it is good to welcome our national bird

As you may have noticed, the camera and nest came down today.  Due to the impending severe weather, COM decided to take everything down before any storms hit.  Craig Koppie came over to help.  I was at work, so unfortunately was not here to take any photos.  No sooner did the camera and nest come down than we had a visitor to the now bare platform:

This platform is not as comfortable as it was yesterday!

This platform is not as comfortable as it was yesterday!

So that’s it for now.  I have two more blogs coming.  One should be published in the next few days, and should be fun.  I’ll write the last one after our end of season gathering.

Please get your RSVP’s in as soon as possible!

Thanks,

Mrs. COMomma

  1. Good afternoon everyone! Good to hear from you Barbara! I know how busy we can get and the days just seem to go poof!
Lillie, I hope Manny is doing better.
I do hope that little E8 has gotten to that point of “I may be little, but I am Mighty! and I’m not gonna take it anymore!”
Hi KATHY! we just had that storm blow through here this morning, they say it’s going up the east coast. Be safe my friend.
Have a wonderful day, and SMILE BIG! Love you guys! 💕 Soon, very soon 🐥🐥🐣🐣

  2. A very late hello friends…the computer is giving me much grief…kept freezing or crashing all day. And I know the reason. It is very old – in computer years – and I need a new one. But I get it up and running for a few more weeks and then it cycles into this crash/freeze mode. It isn’t the money – it’s the fear of change and having to get used to a new operating system. Leap of faith – where are you?
I’m completely in the dark about the animals we have been watching and care about. My greatest concern is for E8. From what I just read on this blog, he seems to be holding his own against E7 and getting enough food. When I finish this post I’ll try to get on the site, so I can crash yet again. The next big event will be osprey chicks hatching soon (we hope and pray) at Pink Shell in Florida. According to Uta, pip-watching should start around March 1st. I’m not a smarty-pants. I just learned a pip is an egg that is starting to show pecking from the baby chick about to hatch.
    Lillie – how is Manny?
When I signed on to this site I saw the water crashing over the COF dock. Be careful and be safe all of you!

    • You’re right Barbara! We’ve just had heavy-duty wind and gusts come through from Bella’s storm she sent us (HaHa)! Also, Sunday will be the “Snow Moon” (full moon) so the tides are running high as well as the gusts. The water at the COF Dock looks more like the ocean and not a bay… Normally, the water depth is likely around no more than 4′ so any wind has a greater ‘wave’ effect that looks more like a washing machine!

  3. Storm Bella is here too, the winds are very strong, it blew out the pilot light of our hot water heater, I’ll have to check on that again later tonight..
Barbara, I know what you mean about computers, my next computer is going to be a Mac book, I love my little Ipad though, it can almost do everything the computer can do.
FD, careful of those winds….how is MIL doing?

Manny is home, but not doing to good, they did do the procedure and fixed the leaky valve, that seems to be holding this time, but he’s lost so much weight and has no appetite…and is having stomach pain, which is a new problem. He came home late yesterday, so everyone is hoping and praying being home will help.

Thank you all for your prayers, you are so sweet and very special to me.

  4. Good evening to all my awesome COPeeps!, Storm Bella here 😉 S o o o o o sorry it’s now there, wow! did we get a ton of rain this morning, there was a point that I couldn’t see the car in the driveway and had to wait to leave for work, but if it makes you feel any better, it’s supposed to get really BRRR cold again by the weekend.
Lillie, I am praying so hard for Manny, I know how difficult it is to watch a beloved friend suffer. One of my best friends, a vibrant, young, beautiful girl, start suffering from muscle weakness into full blown MS at age 35, so painful. Aren’t they giving him any supplements since he has no appetite? He should at the very least be drinking Ensure for nutrition. EVERYONE! Prayers do help! so please lets band together for Manny!
FD, I can’t wait to see that moon. The way the meteorologist here explained it was… look to the west to see the sunset and immediately turn around to the east to see the Snow Moon rising, oh I hope it’s not cloudy.
Barbara, so sorry you’re having problems with your computer, I did the same and finally had to give in and get a new one. I ditched the Desktop, and just got a Laptop, I still can use my large monitor so it’s great.
I hope everyone stays safe, and has a nice night. 🙂

  5. Hi Lillie! I’ve been missing you… Strange doings w/ MIL. There’s been a bit too much ‘funny’ business w/SIL & (maybe) between her & MIL. I don’t have the full story/details & never will. I’ve got that ‘ain’t liking it’ feeling because there are red flags flying all over the place.
MIL isn’t too coherent most of the time; seems as if she has slipped far from normal, then she perks up like her old self. Drives me crazy because I don’t know which one of “her” I’m talking with at any given time. She focused/fixated on getting her electric wh/chair repaired (needs new rechargeable battery?). She admits she can’t transfer herself from bed or recliner to the “Jazzy”. But she wants it running because she’ll “find a way”.
Last Friday night I threw out my back but had to sit with her from 1-5pm on Saturday. I’m walking like the Hunchback of Notre Dame… I could barely walk by the time I left. Here’s what I did: Got her out of bed, into wh/chair, out of wh/chair into recliner, out of recliner into wh/chair to bed, undressed lower half, onto bedside commode, off commode into wh/chair, back to bed to re-dress, back to wh/chair, out of wh/chair into recliner. EVERY transfer is by way of a “Hoyer Lift” (a hydraulic ‘sling’ machine). It’s like the lift a mechanic uses to lift out a motor. I could barely walk to my car when I left…
SIL first proclaimed that she wouldn’t use it because she “couldn’t”. Life has proved that she will use it or else MIL stays wherever she is. The lift has 5″ wheels to help move it over carpet. I told hubby & her that there is an excellent chance we’d have to take up the carpet, at least in the bedroom, & put down laminate/hardwood flooring to make it easier to use/move the lift. Both reacted like I was calling for bare concrete… Well, SIL called the other day screaming ~ at ME ~ that when she tried to use/move it, her heart was trying to jump out of her chest (???) ~ she can’t do it!! Don’t know what her heart has to do with moving it around… I told her it was more a matter of HOW she was trying to use it. Her b/f says we need to put plywood over the carpet ~ nah, won’t work.
But it’s just another in a long list of things I’ve told them was coming that they denied and have now arrived! I’m getting real tired of telling them about what’s coming down the pike so I think I’ll just STOP and let them get surprised when the inevitable rises into a crisis that could have been prevented… MIL chose SIL… I think I’ll let them both simmer in their own stew!

  6. Liberty and Justice just dancin’ in the rain. These two are so beautiful and they are so close they remind me so much of M&M. This is a hoot, I’m sure they are trying to shake their feathers dry but it’s so funny, like little kids playing in the rain. Yep, this is the storm that came through here and they are just North of me.

  7. Good Morning!!! Shew what a storm last night! Water covered my sidewalks again like in December! CRAZY!!
Tide is high swans are far out.
Yesterday I was checking in on E8 E7 I laughed E7 was grabbing food while mom was feeding E7. I was saying out loud go liitle one self feed! Co-workers say who are you talking to know?
Can’t open panda site today may be cleaning.
Liberty and Justice are really beautiful they really love each other! [I know they really don’t] In my mind they do!
Barbara, computer, phones, are such a challenge getting new ones just jump in girl you can do it 🤗
Bella Shew, you sent that storm… Good for you to release Stress!
    Have fun today 👏

  8. KATHY I agree I don’t think that they post all of the feelings or who got feed. E8 got food yesterday afternoon while mom was feeding the bully.

  9. WOW I WOKE UP TO SNOW PREDICTIONS, SERIOUSLY TIRED OF CLOUDS, RAIN, COLD, WIND AND NOW SNOW ???? PRAYING FOR LB’S MANNY !! PRAYERS FOR FD, AND HER OTHER JOB !!~~, TAKE A BREAK. YOU WILL NEED THAT BACK FOR FD !!~~ CHIEF ANGEL TAKE CARE @@!!~ L%J TAKING CARE OF THE NECESSARY BUSINESS. 10. Hi all, looking forward to a new season of the Chesapeake Bay soap opera and I’m determined not to lurk so much and comment a little this year. Imagine my surprise and delight to find the ‘dock’ cam working when I checked in (I’m kicking myself for not trying it way earlier) and am enjoying the tundra swans immensely every morning. I’m now the one who has a question about sound and maybe someone can tell me, does the dock cam have sound? I’m watching on my laptop (it’s a MacBook Pro) and there is no sound, whereas last summer I had no problem hearing the birds. I don’t have sound on my iPad using Safari (but can at least watch), but when I try to connect with Puffin, I can’t even get the camera to open. I used to always watch on my iPad using Puffin because it was more convenient, and I can open other websites and get sound, just not this camera. I love the swans circling and I assume squawking at each other, and when they upend and all you see is their white backends with wildly paddling black webbed feet kicking the water, it’s a hoot and starts my day with a smile. Can anyone help?

  11. Good Morning – Huston, I still have ignition, so let me make the most of it…Storm Bella woke me up about 12:30 this morning with gusts of wind that never seemed to end. The rain was blasting against the windows – couldn’t even look out at times. Things kept bumping into the house – turns out they were tree branches. The kitty kat girls – Abby and Allie were hiding under a chair. I have to admit I was uneasy enough to the point of being scared that something was going to come crashing down or through a window. We have lots of power outages on Long Island due to falling trees. All in all, an incredible storm, and, of course, this morning it is bright, sunny and tranquil.
Lillie – we are all praying for Manny and hoping that he can turn that corner towards wellness. Any sign, any encouragement will lift our hearts for him and you.
Oh, the birds. Yes, Bella, Liberty and Justice are a lot like M&M. They really have gotten along so well since day one. It’s a pleasure to pop in on them and see what they’re up to. I think that’s why we were so upset when E7 started making E8’s life so miserable. Maybe it’s the new father being inexperienced and/or not supplying enough food to keep the potential sibling rivalry/fight for survival under control.
Featherdog, Flamingo, KATHY, Lillie, Bella, and the rest of us, may we have a good day!

  12. Good afternoon everyone! There is a beautiful falcon sitting at their best on the ledge on the light street building. 🙂

  13. Hello to all of my bird brain friends, that’s meant as a compliment!
Welcome Evelyn! You definitely have to chime in more often, we always look forward another voice, another opinion, or point of view, that’s what makes this so interesting and fun.
Storm Bella blew through, no casualties here, thank goodness.
Bella, the video of Liberty and Justice is adorable, I haven’t seen them before, they are beautiful, thank you for sharing.
Manny is about the same as yesterday, no worse, that’s always good to hear.
Thank you all, for your thoughts and prayers.

St. Paddy’s Day is getting closer, it won’t be long now until Audrey returns, I’m so looking forward to the Cam going back in place and the re-building of the nest….AND Mrs. COMomma’s first blog and photos. Although the swan are very beautiful and amusing, there’s nothing like watching the Osprey family moving in and fixing up the new place, then the kids…

    Have a lovely evening

  14. Welcome back, Evelyn in Macon!! If you click on “Older Comments” below the last entry/post you can go back and read all 2,183 posts since September 30, 2015… It starts about 23 or so pages back. The blog has DEFINITELY evolved!
For the Love of the Birds ~ currently in Osprey ‘Anticipation’ Mode and soon-to-be in TaTa Tundra Swans…

  15. A quick good evening friends…the swans are swimming and that brings up my question. One of us blogged that we would soon be saying goodbye to them. Do they go north for the summer? If so, how far north? Or do they go farther south – although I don’t think so – to breed? As soon as I finish this I will google tundra swans.
Hello Evelyn and welcome..Like you, I remained hidden through most of last summer. It wasn’t until the season ended that I joined in. I think the reason was that the summer blog group was so large – and smart – I felt lost in the crowd. Here’s hoping I don’t fade again as the season heats up.

  16. Good evening my wonderful friends!
Welcome back Evelyn from Macon! Nice to hear from you, and yes, please chime in more often this season 🙂
Barbara, so sorry that I, (Storm Bella), caused so much damage and power outage, I’m glad you’re okay. And PLEASE don’t fade into the background again when the new season begins, that would be terrible, you don’t have to be a “know it all” about the Osprey to be a part of our awesome family. No matter how big the blog becomes, and we’ll certainly welcome newbie’s with open wings, we will always have our special little family, and we have become a family of true friends. What I will miss is how we can now address almost each one of us daily and I won’t like it at all when I can’t because it will seem as if I don’t like them. I don’t want to lose touch! I almost want to ask for emails from all that will share just so I can send a personal Hi! and SMILE to my friends each day. I know, I’m such a sap.
Hi Lillie, I wish Manny was doing better but at least he is holding his own. I’m glad you liked the video, they are beautiful and that was just cute silly.
KATHY, I wish I had sunshine and warm weather to send to you but it’s just getting colder and colder here for the weekend. Stay warm and safe.
Have a nice evening everyone 🙂

  17. Atta girl Fran! I LOVED your analogy of the latest East Coast roll-up-storm to Bella releasing pent up STRESS!!! Hilarious! This is the SECOND one Bella sent ~ the first one was a foot of Mother Nature’s snot (snow).
Note to Bella: please make the next one “Spring Flowers” ~ and SOON!

  23. Hi all, I usually wake up early and I tune in to watch the swans. This morning they start gathering around daybreak, around six there was a pretty big crowd, half swans, half ducks. They milled around the dock, swam out and sat, swam back, and circled. I’ve been hoping to catch ‘the feeding’ and finally did this morning. Around 6:50, I noticed all of them suddenly turn and flee en mass, so I figured something (someone) had them on the run. Sure enough, a really nice looking guy (young!) stepped into view and started flinging scoops of corn (?), and you could tell as soon as he stopped (I assume, left the dock) because all the birds returned quickly and started bobbing for food. Watched awhile, left, and when I returned at 8:30, there wasn’t a bird in sight! This so much fun!

  24. It’s interesting that these posts are timed an hour later than real time. My last post was posted at 8:36 am EST and it reads 9:36. For reference, it’s actually 8:41 EST as I post this!

    • Evelyn… CC’s server clock is not set to respect daylight savings time. It will be the correct time again on Sunday, March 13th when we ‘jump ahead’. It’s an easy fix ~ they just haven’t done it… FTLOTBs FD

  25. Good Morning Friends….sunny, cold and very blustery here on Long Island.
Maureen you and your man of steel are doing so well. A dear friend and her husband are on a journey similar to yours and Gene’s – only his tumor is inoperable because of its location around the aorta and bile duct. He is being treated with chemo only, and so far it has been very successful. Like Gene, he is suffering no ill effects, but must be careful of infections and does tire easily. Things get tense around ‘test time’ and I become anxious for them, as I do for you.
I quickly googled tundra swans and was simply amazed. I need to learn more about them and their monumental migration. Like the osprey, I can’t help but wonder why they undertake a migration that so many of them don’t survive.
Lillie, what is the word today on Manny? And Bella, thank you for your kind words. I promise I’ll try not to fade into the background when the season gets into full swing.
Thinking of you KATHY and FF and FD and everyone else.

  32. Good Morning Friends…sunny and chilly here on Long Island, but moderating weather is in our future. Just tuned in on Liberty and Justice and one of them is flapping and wingersizing like crazy. Again, so much like M&M in their happy, pre-fledging days in the nest. I was also lucky enough to see Mei and Bei Bei outside tumbling around together. That’s the first time I ever saw them at play together. I don’t have the heart to see what’s happening with E8; what I see from your posts here breaks my heart. No swans…
