School Days

Happy August 4th everyone! I hope all our viewers with empty nest syndrome are doing well, it’s not fatal, I promise.

There have been some major changes around the nest thanks to Breezy and Spitz. They have both begun to fish, a very important skill to learn for obvious reasons. I know that many of you noticed one of Breezy’s recent catches. Just a few days ago, Breezy proudly brought home a blue crab. This year has been incredibly terrible for crabbing, at least at our house. Reproduction has significantly decreased while the demand for blue crabs has remained the same. Another reason for the decrease in the blue crab population is the scarcity of bay grasses. Bay grasses are a three- in- one deal. They keep the water clean, as well as provide food and shelter for animals such as our crabby friends. Unfortunately, pollutants, humans, and waterfowl have hindered the growth of these important plants. While bay grasses are now beginning to thrive in early August, be sure to keep the scarcity of bay grasses in mind the next time you are on a boat. Follow the posted speed limits in shallow waters to avoid pulling the grasses out with your propeller and obviously, never dump your waste into our precious water!

With that mini lesson out of the way, back to the birds. Since crabs usually hang out among the grasses on the bottom of the bay, the one that Breezy caught was probably swimming near the surface. Breezy must have been really confused, surprised and disappointed when his family was not happy with his proud catch.  The crab remained in the nest for a couple of days, and disappeared.

Just a few minutes ago, Spitz found himself in an altercation with some crows. Although I didn’t see the beginning of the incident, we think Spitz had a piece of fish in the nest.  What we did see was when out of nowhere, several crows began to dive bomb him. Spitz then took off and the crows followed, dive-bombing and bullying him. Screeching and evasive flying ensued until the crows flew off and Spitz returned to the nest. We then noticed a crow sitting on the boat lift eating a piece of fish. We assume that the crows took the fish from Spitz, and despite his efforts, our youngest osprey couldn’t win it back from the gang of robber crows.  The fish was lost, but skilled flying was practiced. There’s a life lesson for you, Spitz.

Not only crows try to steal fish from our osprey.  Here is one of our young ones after a fish in flight:

Three of our family on the dock two doors to the south of us.  Tom likes to hang out on the swim ladder and eat, his family members are just enjoying some time away from the nest.

The birds continue to spend time at their favorite hangout spots: our neighbor’s tree, our boat lift, our dock and the three perches. Yesterday, we saw father and child sitting on the same perch; even though there are three perches, the center one is obviously the best.

  1. JUST A FEW MINUTES AGO, A FISH WAS DELIVERED, I DON’T BY WHO, BUT THE CHILDREN WERE IN A SCUFFLE SOMEONE GOT THEIR FOOT BEAKED, AND FLEW OFF. I THINK SPITZ HAS WON AND HAS THE FISH, AND IT WAS STILL MOVING, SO EVERY THERE WAS A BITE TAKEN, THE TAIL FLAPPED, REALLY UPSETTING TO SPITZ !!! TOO FUNNY !!

    • I was watching then too Kathy. It was Spitz sitting in the nest yapping for the longest time, then Breezy came to the nest with a big fat fish. Spitz was on Breezy so fast, biting on Breezy’s foot! What a fighter Spitz has become. Ha, paybacks…….for all the earlier head pecking Spitz received from Breezy at feeding time. They are very funny and love watching them. What will I do all winter long?

  2. I KNOW I SEE SPITZ IS STILL EATING, AND IS ABOUT HALF WAY DOWN THE FISH !!! HUGH. SLAP .ON BREEZY’S EGO. I ENJOYED IT ALSO, BUT IT WILL TURN AROUND AGAIN IN TIME. I WONDER IF BREEZY HAD TO GO THE EMERGENCY ROOM FOR THAT FOOT.HOPE NOT, BUT IT WAS A SIGHT TO BEHOLD !!! BABY WAS TIRED FROM SITTING IN THAT NEST ALL NIGHT IN THE RAIN, NERVES ARE NOT GOOD !! SPITZ A LITTLE ON EDGE TODAY !!!

    • Looks like no one is tidying up the nest as much as before. Perhaps they are losing interest now? Feeling a bit more at home outside of the nest now? Waaaaaaaaaaa What are the temps there now? So hot here I can barely breathe! Thanks Kathy for the continued reports to keep us updated.

  3. BREEZY YELPING THE HEAD OFF, AND EATING AT THE SAME TIME, MOM ATTACKED BY BREEZY BRING IN A PARTIAL FISH, BREEZY GULPING DOWN THE FOOD, AND WHAT A.MOUTH ON THAT BIRD !! GEEZ, BREEZ !!!

    • Saw some kind of web footed sea bird in the nest. Breezy came in and claimed the nest back. They are something. I think Breezy’s foot is okay now! I haven’t seen the babies in the nest at night but Audrey is usually there, just in case.

  4. MOM JUST DELIVERED A NICE FAT FISH FOR SPITZ, WHO PROMPTLY HAD A LITTLE WING SPREADING THIS IS ALL MINE EPISODE, THEN TOOK IT AND FLEW OFF, NOW I DON’T GET TO SEE THE GOBBLE JOB !!!SPITZ, GETTING AN ATTITUDE !!MOM ASKING, IS ANYONE HERE??? NO ANSWER YET!!!EVERYONE STUFFING THEIR FACE !!!

    • I’ve been watching also. Mom there a long while alone. Spritz came in chatting away. Dad landed briefly and took off –most likely to bring lunch!

  5. DAD CAME WITH A HEADLESS FISH, WHICH FITZ QUICKLY SNATCHED, AND THEN WING GUARDED IT, LOOKED AROUND, AND FLEW OFF !~! DARN NO GOBBLE FEST TO SEE. MOM JUST THERE ALONE AGAIN.

  6. Not sure if Audrey is upset that everyone disturbed her solitude or that she got no part of lunch—still on nest relaxing!

  7. Dad back and trying to tstraighten nest. Clearly, mom does not want him to—why? Think she is trying to make things uncomfortable so they can start thinking about leaving? hummmm

  8. Tom and Audrey in the next and Spitz yelling it’s head off. Nobody’s bringing food and Spitz too lazy to get her own? They are all just sitting there looking at each other. So cute! Love this family.

  9. 5:30 PM and Spritz just flew in with a whole headless fish. Seems all have eaten well today. Signing off now. Have a good evening folks!

  10. I MAKE A LOT OF MISTAKES, THAT IS WHY I TYPE IN CAPS, SO I AM NOT YELLING AT YOU’LL !! THAT IS THE READ WHAT ANSWER. SPITZ HAD A WHOLE FISH, ALMOST OR MAYBE WAS AS LARGE AS HE/SHE, THEN CAME MOM WITH SOME FISH FOR BREEZY, EVERYONE DOING THE WING PROTECTION SPREAD, AND YELLING THIS IS MINE !!! TOO FUNNY !!! I HAVE NO IDEA HOW SPITZ GOT THAT FISH, BUT THE MEAL IS STILL GOING ON !!! YES, THEY HAVE EATEN LIKE LITTLE PIGS !!!THAT IS A GOOD THING !!!

  11. AFTER ABOUT FIVE MINUTES, SPITZ CAME BACK, AS MOM WAS EATING THE FISH LEFT BY SPITZ, WENT INTO A BEGGING FOR FOOD, AND SHE SHARED THE FISH , GOOD MOM ,SPOILED SPITZ !! NO ONE IN THE NEST

  12. Spitz in the nest all afternoon yelling. To my knowledge hasn’t left it for several hours. Wonder what’s going on with her/him? ?

    • Tom & Audrey are forcing them to do more hunting and capturing prey. They need to learn and perfect that skill before they migrate and live by themselves.

  13. 2:52 PM Sat. afternoon–Spritz and Audrey on the nest. Spritz eating a headless fish and Mom watching. Have no idea who caught it. Hopefully Spritz will share with mom!

  14. LOOKS LIKE SPITZ HAS MOM’S FISH, AND IS TOO FULL TO EAT IT, AND IS TRYING TO SLEEP STANDING THERE !! SPOILED !!I GUESS IT IS HARD TO DEAL WITH A FISH WHEN THAT YOUNG, YAPPING GOING ON, LET ME CHECK !!

    • I know! Funny how Spritz wised up and then became the more aggressive one! They are both getting so big! I think larger than the parents perhaps. When do they take off for South America? Do they fly in groups or alone? What month do they return to prepare for the next family? Sometime in the spring I believe. Signing off for the night. ( :
